You're more than a mom. Get more than a workout. This is the tagline for my business and a concept I feel very strongly about. Nothing compares to motherhood. Our little babies are our worlds. They are everything to us. How many times do we hear "Mom!"or "mama" throughout each day? To our children the role of their mother is pretty simple. We nurture, provide, answer questions, fix things, feed, clean, organize, stop fights, etc. However to us as moms, our role is complex, exhausting, beautiful, hard to put words to. Within a mother's mind is a constant flux of internal struggles, feelings of inadequacy, pure exhaustion and defeat, and if we're lucky we will get some bliss mixed in at some point during the day. We wouldn't trade it for the world, but it can be a very tiring place to reside for too long. Balance is a tricky spot to try to find. How do we balance being a mom with all our other identities? I don't think we do. Something will always have to fall off, at least for a bit. What does it mean to be more than a mom? That will be different for each person. Motherhood is a strong identity, as it should be, but it is also an easy one to get lost in. Some moms lose themselves in it unaware for years and years, then are suddenly surprised when the children are grown and they don't even know who they are anymore. Who were you before you were a mom? What did you like to do? What do YOU want to accomplish in life? How do you want to feel? What will it take to get there? Devote some time to get there, whether the goal is an activity, a feeling, a friendship, or anything else that feels important to you. I love fitness because it puts you in the moment. It creates a special energy which can motivate and inspire you. There is something to be said for movement of the body. Literal movement can translate into movement within the mind. Things begin to shift. Perspectives can change. Exercise can also take you out of your mind which is great for moms like me that need a break from the mental load. Why do moms deserve more that just a workout? Working out isn't about weight loss or looking like you have it all together. It isn't about proving to the world that you are the ideal mom that can have it all and still look like a million bucks. Fitness is about the journey inside your mind as well as your body. It is about becoming self aware. It is about taking down the negative self talk and replacing it with statements reaffirming self-worth. It is feeling good and strong in your own body. This is the only body you will ever have. Love it! Love yourself as a mom, but more importantly love yourself as a person, motherhood aside. You are more. You deserve more.
